Tech Corner: “Hangout with Us”Google+ Hangouts & Live Stream OnAir

Google Hangouts have become a popular resource for both personal and professional use in 2015. We have seen an array of programs ranging from admissions Q&A sessions to employer/alumni panels. As an avid user of Google Hangouts, I wanted to explore practical uses for this platform in our career service offices.
What is A Google Hangout
A Google Hangout is a live-streaming web feature provided by Google that allows users to live-stream video to a global audience.

What is an On-Air Hangout?
The on-air feature allows the video to be recorded and watched later on a connected YouTube channel or website.

Google Hangouts and Career Services
Google Hangouts offer career services a unique opportunity to connect students, alumni and professionals in one (online) space. Let’s look at a few ways Hangouts on-air can benefit your department:

Speakers, Panels, Presentations
● By using the Google Hangouts On-Air feature you are able to have a
conversation or interview with a subject matter expert or employer while
sharing it with the world or in this case your student population. Take the time
to organize a Hangout On-Air that benefits your audience and share the link so
they can tune in live. You may also followup with additional links to the saved
recording that lives on your YouTube page or career center website providing
additional value that can be archived.

Link employers to students for meet-ups or Interviews
● Have employers who can’t make it to the office? Thanks to tools like Google
Hangouts you can schedule video conversations or digital meetups with them
no matter where they are. For example, this can be a way to engage your
students who may be studying abroad for the semester or alumni who are no
longer on campus.
Virtual Office Hours/Walk-in hours
● Can’t be in the office or have students who can’t make the office? Google
Hangouts are the perfect tool to connect and schedule meetings with students
or employers.
Collaborate with students & colleagues offsite or at other campus locations
● College campuses vary in shapes, size and locations. If your campus is split up
in various locations, Google Hangouts can help you better collaborate and work
together. Combining Google Tools like Hangouts and Google Drive offers a
collaborative combination that allows you to find new levels of communication
success.
